How the Haiphong to Los Angeles route runs

Cargo is received at Haiphong terminals such as Tan Vu and the deepwater Lach Huyen area (HICT, Hateco Lach Huyen). The current schedule shows about 1 sailings a week, operated by Maersk.

Maersk's published schedule has one transshipment at an intermediate port. No direct service appears on it.

Los Angeles sits next to Long Beach, and together the two ports form the San Pedro Bay complex. Cargo with a Los Angeles POD may be discharged at a terminal in either port, so check the terminal on your booking and give it to your consignee for trucking.

How many days to Los Angeles

Schedules list port-to-port transit, counted from the vessel leaving Haiphong to its arrival at the destination port. Right now that runs from 21 to 25 days.

That is not the time until cargo reaches your warehouse. In Vietnam you still have to stuff the container, haul it to the port before cut-off, clear export customs and wait for the vessel. In the US there is vessel arrival, discharge, import clearance and drayage to the warehouse. Each step adds days.

Transshipment adds another risk: if a connecting vessel is missed (a roll), the real schedule slips from the published one. Plan backward from the date you need the cargo in the warehouse, not from the vessel's arrival date.

US documents and rules to finish before loading

The ISF ("10+2") is filed by the US importer or their agent. It covers the seller, buyer, manufacturer, country of origin, HTS number and other data. The deadline is at least 24 hours before cargo is loaded onto the vessel at the foreign port (19 CFR 149.2). A late or incomplete filing can draw a $5,000 penalty per violation under the bond conditions (19 CFR 113.64). If you ship from Vietnam, send your buyer complete data, and send it early.

The carrier or NVOCC must also transmit the cargo declaration through CBP's AMS 24 hours before loading (19 CFR 4.7). That is why SI and document cut-offs on US routes usually fall earlier than on other lanes, and why a wrong cargo description has to be fixed before the vessel sails.

The importer needs a bond, either single entry or continuous, or CBP will not release the cargo (19 CFR 142.4). If your US buyer is importing for the first time, ask about the bond early. On duties, from 24 July 2026 most Vietnamese goods entering the US face an additional 12.5% Section 301 tariff (USTR). Some products also carry their own anti-dumping or countervailing duties, so check by HS code before you quote DDP.

Peak season, cut-offs and fees at Los Angeles

In peak season, demand arrives early and pushes rates up sharply, and carriers add a peak season surcharge (PSS), as they did in July 2026. Book early, share your forecast with your forwarder and lock documents early, because the SI and AMS cut-offs fall well before the sailing date. Miss one vessel and you wait for the next, which on a thin schedule can mean a full week.

At Los Angeles and Long Beach, most cargo moving through the terminals pays the Traffic Mitigation Fee (TMF) under the OffPeak (PierPass) program, plus the Clean Truck Fund fee. Agree in your incoterms or contract who pays these US-side charges, so there is no dispute once the cargo has arrived.

FAQ

How many days does shipping from Haiphong to Los Angeles take?

Port-to-port transit is currently 21 to 25 days, counted from the vessel leaving Haiphong to its arrival at the destination port. Door-to-warehouse time is longer, since both ends add steps and a missed connection at the transshipment port can add a delay.

How much does ocean freight from Haiphong to the US cost?

Homexim does not publish rates on the web because ocean freight moves with the season, the carrier and the container type. Send your route, container type and cargo ready date to get an itemized quote.

Is there a direct sailing from Haiphong to Los Angeles?

Not on Maersk's current published schedule. The route has one transshipment at an intermediate port. A missed connection can push actual dates away from the published schedule.

What is the ISF, who files it and when is it due?

The ISF is the importer security filing ("10+2"), made by the US importer or their agent. It is due at least 24 hours before cargo is loaded onto the vessel at the foreign port. If you ship from Vietnam, send your buyer the seller, manufacturer, origin and product code details early.

What else should I know when shipping wood or food products to the US?

Wood products must be declared under the Lacey Act, including the scientific name (genus and species) of the wood, its value and quantity, so get species names from your material supplier in advance. Food shipments need an FDA-registered facility and a Prior Notice confirmed at least 8 hours before the cargo reaches the port.
