Sailing to Rotterdam from HHIT Lach Huyen

HHIT (Hateco Haiphong International Container Terminal) runs berths 5 and 6 at Lach Huyen and has been in commercial operation since 5 April 2025. It is the first privately funded deepwater port project in Vietnam. The terminal covers nearly 73 ha, has a 900 m main quay and can handle two of the world's largest container ships at once.

Rotterdam cargo loads at Lach Huyen, moves through one transshipment hub and joins a mother vessel there. Maersk's schedule currently shows about 1 sailings a week, operated by Maersk. Shippers in Hai Phong, former Hai Duong, Bac Ninh, Hung Yen and Hanoi no longer need to truck boxes south.

Trucks run from industrial parks to Lach Huyen over the Tan Vu - Lach Huyen bridge. Work backwards from the cut-off to set pickup times, and add a buffer for traffic and gate-in queues. Cargo sitting at river ports or ICDs can come out by barge, using the terminal's 300 m barge berth.

Transit time, transshipment and missed connections

Transit runs from 32 to 41 days, depending on the sailing. On Maersk's schedule, Hai Phong sailings connect to the same mother vessel as Cai Mep sailings: same vessel name, same arrival date in Rotterdam.

The weak point is the transshipment hub. If a connection is missed, actual arrival slips. Pick sailings by ETA in Rotterdam, not by the departure date from Lach Huyen.

Rotterdam is a gateway port, with onward moves to Germany and Belgium by barge or rail. Peak periods are the weeks before Tet and the European year-end retail season. Book early and hold your forecast.

EU documents

ENS falls under the EU's ICS2 system and must be lodged at least 24 hours before the container is loaded on the vessel carrying it into the EU. For transshipped cargo that is usually the mother vessel, but the data has to be complete by the time the cargo leaves Hai Phong: a specific goods description, the 6-digit HS code, and full shipper and consignee details. If data is missing, EU customs can reject the filing or ask for more, and the cargo will arrive late. From 1 June 2026, every shipment entering the EU must carry a valid ENS.

The EU importer needs an EORI number to clear customs. To claim EVFTA preferential duty, goods must meet the rules of origin and carry an EUR.1 certificate of origin. Consignments worth no more than EUR 6,000 in total can use an origin declaration by the exporter on the invoice, valid for 12 months.

Steel, aluminium and CBAM

Steel and aluminium fall under CBAM. From 1 January 2026, EU importers must be authorised, file reports and buy CBAM certificates based on the emissions embedded in the goods. Buyers will ask exporters for emissions data, so have it ready in advance.

Asia-Europe freight also carries an ETS surcharge, where carriers pass emissions costs on to shippers. Pallets and wooden crates must meet ISPM 15, treated by HT or MB and stamped. Destination charges such as terminal handling charges (THC) at the discharge port and D/O fees are paid by one side or the other depending on incoterms, so settle this in the contract. For timber and rubber goods, check EUDR as well.

FAQ

How many days does it take from Hai Phong to Rotterdam?

32 to 41 days, depending on the sailing and the connecting vessel at the transshipment hub. A missed connection stretches the actual schedule.

Do I have to truck cargo to Cai Mep?

No. Cargo loads at Lach Huyen and moves by feeder or connecting vessel through one transshipment hub.

How much is freight from Hai Phong to Rotterdam?

This page does not publish rates because freight changes with each sailing. Homexim quotes itemise every charge, with a separate line for the ETS surcharge.

What do steel and aluminium shipments to the EU need?

Emissions data for the goods, so the EU buyer can report and buy certificates under CBAM.

Who files the ENS?

The carrier or forwarder files the ENS, based on data supplied by the shipper. If the data is missing or wrong, EU customs can reject the filing.
