How the Cai Mep to Rotterdam route works

Cargo is received at CMIT (Cai Mep International Terminal), a deep-water port run by a joint venture of Saigon Port, VIMC and APM Terminals, established on 26 January 2007. Containers from factories in Binh Duong and the former Dong Nai go by road straight down to Cai Mep.

Maersk's current schedule has one transshipment at a hub port. About 1 sailings a week are operated by Maersk.

CMIT is the southern home port of the Gemini alliance (Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, operating since 1 February 2025). Gemini runs hub-and-spoke: mainline vessels call at a few major ports, and cargo at other ports moves by feeder to the hub.

Transit time and how to pick a sailing

Transit runs from 35 to 44 days. The spread is wide because the wait for the connecting vessel at the hub differs on every sailing. Two departures a few days apart can still reach Rotterdam on the same day, so pick by ETA, not by sailing date.

These figures are port to port. They exclude trucking from the factory and formalities at both ends. Rotterdam is Europe's largest port, and cargo going on to Germany or Belgium by barge or rail takes extra time.

EU documents: ENS, EORI, EUR.1

Cargo entering the EU needs an Entry Summary Declaration (ENS) filed in ICS2. For sea containers, the ENS is due at least 24 hours before the container is loaded on the vessel that carries it to the EU. Because of the transshipment, the ENS data must be complete from the moment cargo leaves Cai Mep. From 1 June 2026, every shipment entering the EU must have a valid ENS.

EU customs can reject an ENS with missing data or ask for more, which delays your cargo as soon as it arrives. Before cut-off, send the person handling your shipment a specific cargo description, the 6-digit HS code, and full details of the shipper and consignee. The EU importer needs an EORI number for customs clearance, and each company can hold only one valid EORI.

EVFTA eliminates 99% of EU tariff lines on Vietnamese goods, with some products on phase-out schedules or quotas. Your goods must meet the rules of origin to qualify. Proof is an EUR.1 certificate, or an origin declaration the exporter makes on the invoice if the whole consignment does not exceed EUR 6,000 (valid for 12 months). Consignments over EUR 6,000 need an EUR.1 certificate.

Timber, coffee, rubber: EUDR and end-of-route costs

EUDR covers timber, coffee, rubber and derived products such as furniture. Large and medium companies must comply from 30 December 2026. The party placing goods on the EU market files the due diligence statement. To do that, it needs geolocation data for the growing or harvesting plots from the exporter, grouped by each shipment arriving in the EU after 30 December 2026.

Pallets and wooden crates must meet ISPM 15: HT or MB treatment, with the stamp.

EU ETS requires shipping lines to surrender emission allowances for voyages to and from the EU. Lines pass this cost on as an ETS surcharge, shown as a separate line in your quote.

Destination charges such as THC at the destination port and D/O fees are paid by whichever party the incoterms assign. Settle that in the contract before you book.

FAQ

How many days does it take from Cai Mep to Rotterdam?

35 to 44 days port to port, depending on the sailing. That excludes trucking and formalities at both ends.

Is there a direct sailing from Cai Mep to Rotterdam?

No. Maersk's current schedule has one transshipment.

How much does shipping from Cai Mep to Rotterdam cost?

Rates change by sailing and cargo type, so this page does not publish prices. A Homexim quote shows the ETS surcharge on its own line.

What do wood furniture and coffee need for the EU from late 2026?

From 30 December 2026, EUDR requires geolocation data for the growing or harvesting plots so the EU importer can file a due diligence statement. The same applies to rubber.

Is EUR.1 mandatory?

You need EUR.1 to get EVFTA preferential duty, or an origin declaration on the invoice if the whole consignment does not exceed EUR 6,000. Without either, you pay standard duty.
